How to Use Yoga to Cope with a Bad Day

Do you ever have one of those days where you are tired, a bit stressed but generally OK until someone pushes into you on the tube, or the traffic on your way to work is terrible, or someone sends you a really annoying email (or all of these things in one go)?

Yep, one of ‘those’ days. They really suck and sometimes they just seem to spiral out of control with ‘one thing after another’ getting you down.

The Importance of Being Grounded

When we are overly affected by what is happening around us, or the actions of those around us, we are probably suffering from a lack of grounding. As one of my recent quotes from class says – ‘by changing the inner aspects of our minds, we can change the outer aspects of our lives’.

So the good news is ‘those’ days are able to be remedied, if we are prepared to look to ourselves for the solution!

So when you feel one of ‘those’ days coming on, what can you do?

Firstly breathe. Focus on your breath coming in and out of your nose, nice and easy, no forcing, just follow your breath and allow your mind a few moments of time-out.

Secondly take off your shoes and put your feet on the earth. If it has to be the office carpet so be it, but if you can sneak outside and get them on the grass even better.

Thirdly use Mountain pose. Standing feet hip width apart, core muscles switched on, shoulders relaxed, crown lifting and feet solid on the floor (in shoes is fine) is a great way to reconnect with yourself and the earth, and not take on board everyone else’s bad day baggage.

Lastly, get to a yoga class if you can. Just give yourself some time away from your to do list, your busy-ness and your ‘bad’ day.
